Highland Tresures
Bartók Trilogy: First Part
Our era is characterized by constant changes. Our economic environment, the society in which we live, our customs, our culture are in change – we, the people, are also changing. In this world of transformation, it is difficult to hold on since our attitude towards tradition, expected to be permanent and unchanged, also undergoes a transformation. We are no longer satisfied with reproducing the folklore we have witnessed or that is transmitted either by mediators or recorded audio/video materials. We identify and show this part of culture that is topical, applicable and valuable to us; we try to identify ourselves using our idiom and to locate ourselves in our world.
Producing Highland Treasures, the Hungarian State Folk Ensemble pioneers in providing an overview of the world of dance and music of the ethnically diverse Highlands of today’s Southern Slovakia. First, we selected from the cultural heritage of the regions where Bartók had started his work as an ethnomusicologist (Gömör, Zoborvidék, Upper Garam Region etc.), although, instead of taking an inventory, we rather intended to represent Bartók's conception of the Carpathian Basin.
On the occasion of the Bartók anniversary, we can rediscover the genius of Béla Bartók. We focus our attention on an exemplary life-work and mentality leading us on the way of knowing folk music and folk dances as perfectly as possible and, taking those as a starting point, creating our own up-to-date and live idiom.
Highland Treasures is the first part of the Bartók Trilogy; the Ensemble performs the "genuine" in a form that is the closest to the source. The following parts, (to be produced in the near future) will pursue Bartók's course from an inspiring model to a contemporary idiom, from the genuine to the abstract.
