Budapest tour
1. National Theatre
The construction of National Theatre was begun by architecht Mária Siklós’s plans on 14th September, 2000. As the result of a very fast implementation it was made just in 15 months.
2. Palace of Arts
The creators of this unique building in Central Europe were led by the idea to establish Europe’s new cultural citadell in the Hungarian capital: to stand in Millennium City centre on the coast of the Danube, which is on the list of World Heritage of UNESCO.
3. Hotel Gellért
St. Gellért Hotel and Thermal Bath was built in the elegant palace style of secession of the beginning of the century, in 1918.
4. Gellért Hill
Gellért Hill got its name after bishop Gellért who was toppled from the top of the hill by pagan Hungarians in 1046 -according to the legend. Arrant witches of Gellért hill thumbed their nose at the saint’s name and assembled still in the 17th century – if it is true…
5. Citadella
Citadella can be found on the most beautiful place of Budapest, on the top of Gellért Hill. It was built by the Habsburg dynasty after the Hungarian revolution and war of independence of 1848-49 was defeated. UNESCO decleared Gellért Hill with the Castle of Buda and the view of both coasts of the Danube to be a member of World Heritage in 1987.
6. Statue of Liberty
Statue of Liberty on Gellért Hill is a symbol of Budapest, it’s a woman raising her hand and holding a perch of a palm. Its original official name was Monument of Enfranchisement. The statue itself is 14 m high, with its pedestal it reaches as high as 40 m. Originally, it was made as a monument of the Soviet army invading Budapest but after the fall of the Soviet communist regime it was particularly transformed, that’s how it’s got the current shape.
7. Castle of Buda
The castle within the king’s palace stands on a hill made of marl. It’s on the west coast of the Danube and since 1987 it’s been a member of World Heritage. A labyrinth inside the hill, while architectural and cultural reminiscences of centuries were saved on the surface. ’Europe has cities as beads: Venice on water, Florence on plain and Buda on hill’ – said medieval travellers.
8. Church of Matthias
Building the Church of Our Lady began in the reign of Bela IV with early Gothic elements (1255-1269). The building was devoted to the Church of Our Lady but it was mentioned as the Church of Matthias. Coronation, royal weddings were taken place there. It was built in Gothic style, was converted several times, current neo-Gothic form was made on the turn of 19-20 centuries. Bela III, Hungarian king (ruled from 1173 to 1196) and his wife, Anne Antiochia have lain in their ornate sarcophagus in the chapel of Trinity.
9. Fishermen’s Bastion
New Fishermen’s Bastion, which has never been used for defensive aims, was built on the place of an old work, on walls of a castle from the 18th century. It was designed by Frigyes Schulek. Its seven towers symbolize the seven settler leaders. This neo-Gothic building has particular part in the cityscape of Budapest. Schulek also designed the ornate flight of steps (the main steps are made of marble) between the towers. Nowdays it wears his name.
10. Chain Bridge
Chain Bridge is the first regarding its age and fame among the bridges in Budapest. Second constant bridge of the whole section of the Danube! Adam Clark built it between 1839-1849, based on W. Th. Clark’s plans, initiated by István Széchenyi
11. Saint Stephen’s Basilica
Basilica is the most significant religious and touristic sight of Budapest. Building the church was started on 14 August, 1851 according to architecht József Hild’s plans. He led the work till his death on 6 March, 1867. Miklós Ybl was assigned with the further building of the important buildup by the council of Pest city. He was an acclaimed master of that age; he created several metropolitan public works as well as the Opera house. He continued building the Basilica to the end but because of his death the inside and decorating work of fine arts were made under the direction of József Kauser by 1905.
12. House of Parliament
Beginning of building it began in 1885, took 17 years and in average 1000 workers laboured a day. It was the biggest investment in those days and attention was taken that every pieces had to be made by Hungarian material, with Hungarian technology and by Hungarian masters. If there was no prestigeous Hungarian person in a trade, masters were brought from abroad to teach inland contractors. The total amount of the 22-23 carat gold used for decoration was almost 40 kg.
13. Margaret Island
Rare, valuable, unique and as well delighting plants live in the most beautiful and protected park of the capital. But there are also national monuments and sport centres, beaches to spend free time there. Margaret Island was created during the regulation of the Danube from many small islands. Its area is 95,6 acre, length is 2500 m, the widest part is 500 m wide.
Szentendre
Main square
The remembrance cross can be found here, which like the square is triangular. The Serb Privilegized Trade Company of Szentendre had it built in 1763, it was restored twice.
Honor gate
Preobrazsenszka was shifted by so called ’tabakosok’ or tawers. The wrought iron gate leaves of the copf style honor gate of the curtain belonging to the building were made by József Olhauser, smith master between 1803 and 1806. The famous Serb fairground took always place in the church and its court beyond memory.
Dalmatian house
The ornament of Donkey Hill is the so called Dalmatian house.
Townhall
This has been the hall of the city government since the 18th century. The original building was one-storied. Upstairs was built on it based on Manó Lessner’s plans in 1924. It is still one of the symbols in the city with its pillared balcony and neo-baroque frontage.
A skanzen
The open-air Ethnographical Museum (established in 1967) shows folk architecture, interior furnishing, life style of the most significant landscapes in Hungary with original buildings and objects from the end of the 18th century to the middle of the 20 century.
Visegrád
Royal Palace
The revealed parts of the one time palace show Gothic and Renaissance style. Here was the Hungarian rulers’ official residence for a while then their summer residence. Lower castle:Lesson of the tartars and news about another Mongolian attack drove Béla IV Hungarian king to strengthen the line of the Danube with modern stone castles to protect the western part of the country. This was the beginning the build a new castle in Visegrád. There are no date to define the building centre of the Lower castle but probably the end of the work was referred with the fact that Béla IV was in Visegrád in October, 1265.
Mountain fastness
It was made as a refuge castle for the black frier nuns of Nyulak (Rabbits) Island, including princess Margaret.
Calvary Chapel
Calvary Chapel was built in the 18th century, in 1770. This baroque building stands on a hill above the settlement.
Mary’s Chapel
The coastal chapel of the Danube was built in baroque style in the beginning of the 18th century. The hill,where the small chapel is, was collected by the soldiers of Charles of Lotharingia from the neighbouring settlements and the Turkish in the tower were cannoned from here. There are several ideas to the origin of the chapel, some people say the soldiers promised if they defeated the Turkish, they would build a chapel on that place, others say German people built it settled after the Turkish.
Roman Watchtower
The square wathctowe next to the stonepit was an important defensive unit belonging to the ’limes’. Soldiers in Martia I’s legionary built it 372 A.D in the reign of Caesar Valentianianus.
Roman Catholic Church
This baroque church was built in the second part of the 18th century, designed by Lénárt Schade.
Solomon’s Tower
Solomon’s Tower is a tower to live in the Lower castle, built in the 13th century. It is almost a unique building of the Hungarian architecture of that age. It was damaged several times, then restored. Nowdays it is Museum.
Esztergom
Mária Valéria bridge
The original, 496m long bridge was built between Esztergom and Párkány during two and a half years and was inaugurated on 28 September, 1895. It was named with the king’s permission after Francis Josef’s daughter, Mária Valéria archduchess, born in Buda.
Castle hill
The revealed royal castle stands here as well as Basilica and some statues. You can see the Danube, Mária Valéria Bridge, City of Water and St. Thomas’s hill from here.
Basilica
Primate Sándor Rudnay started to build the cathedral in 1822. He wanted Esztergom to be the parochial centre of the country again. Visitors are fascinated by the enourmous size entering the dome.
Town hall
Széchenyi square ends in an enormous Rococo palace with arcade, worked up between 1770-73, this is Town hall. Originally János Bottyán’s mansion was there in the 17th century. He was a famous general during Rákóczi’s war of independence.
