March 15.

  • Anniversary of the 1848 Revolution

On March 15, 1848 a revolution started (initiated by the “March youths”) against the Habsburg rule that started in 1686, and this revolution grew into a war of independence against them. Hungary has lost, and we remained part of the Habsburg Empire, but we were not suppressed (that much) any more, and the so-called Austro-Hungarian Monarchy came to alive – in which of course we were not equal members, but this status was at least a bit more than what we experienced before. In all Hungary you can find many streets, squares, roads named after the famous leaders and participants of this revolution, such as Lajos Kossuth, István Széchenyi, Sándor Pet?fi, etc. Each year on this day there are speeches and music on various spots around the city, and it is a habit to wear a cockade with the national colours (red, white and green).

  • St. Stephen's Day, Foundation of the State, the "Day of the new bread"

The first king of Hungary was Saint Stephen (his pagan name was Vajk). It was him, who realised that in order to be able to settle down here in Europe, the wandering nomadic Hungarians have to take the Christian religion. He was the first one to be crowned with our Holy Crown (which was sent by the pope) in 1000, and with this Hungary was established as a Christian kingdom. So this day is celebrated not only as the day of Saint Stephen, but as the day of the Foundation of the Hungarian State itself as well.  Each year on this day there is a craftsmen’s market up in the castle, and in the evening we celebrate with a half-hour fireworks on the banks of the Danube. This event is attended by several hundreds of thousands of people.

October 23.

  • Day of the Republic (1989), 1956 Revolution Memorial Date

In 1956, on this very day a peaceful mass-demonstration took place, which later grew into a nationwide revolution against the Soviet-imposed policies. The revolution lasted til November 10, 1956. On October 23, 1989, the Third Hungarian Republic was declared, putting an end to the long-lasting communist era.
